چکیده

1. The goal of conservation and restoration activities is tomaintain biological diversity and the ecosystem services that this diversity provides. These activities traditionally focus on the measures of species diversity that include only information on the presence and abundance of species. Yet how diversity influences ecosystem function depends on the traits and niches filled by species. 2. Biological diversity can be quantified in ways that account for functional and phenotypic differences. A number of such measures of functional diversity (FD) have been created, quantifying the distribution of traits in a community or the relativemagnitude of species similarities and differences. We review FD measures and why they are intuitively useful for understanding ecological patterns and are important for management. 3. In order for FD to be meaningful and worth measuring, it must be correlated with ecosystem function, and it should provide information above and beyond what species richness or diversity can explain. We review these two propositions, examining whether the strength of the correlation between FD and species richness varies across differing environmental gradients and whether FD offers greater explanatory power of ecosystem function than species richness. 4. Previous research shows that the relationship between FD and richness is complex and context dependent. Different functional traits can show individual responses to different gradients, meaning that important changes in diversity can occur with minimal change in richness. Further, FD can explain variation in ecosystem function evenwhen richness does not. 5. Synthesis and applications. FDmeasures those aspects of diversity that potentially affect community assembly and function. Given this explanatory power, FD should be incorporated into conservation and restoration decision-making, especially for those efforts attempting to reconstruct or preserve healthy, functioning ecosystems.

The effect of waterway distance on species diversity and Plant Functional Groups in mountainous rangelands of Anbaran Chai, Ardabil

The plant communities locating at the margins of the waterways play a vital role in the ecological processes and ecosystem services in the semi-arid mountainous regions. In this study, variations of plant diversity and composition at different distances from the waterway and its slope aspects were investigated. For this purpose, 15 sub-basins with a variety of area and length of waterway, in bo...

Determination of effective environmental factors on plants functional diversity and species diversity in Ravar rangelands

The aim of the study was to investigate affecting environmental factors on functional diversity indices and species diversity for the fluctuation of the management according to the ecological conditions in Raver rangeland. To determine the functional attributes of rangeland plants, 12 height points were selected along elevation gradient those were distance between them100 meters. 5 sampling plo...

Change of Species Diversity in Vascular Plants Across Ecological Species Groups

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in stability and productivity of natural ecosystem. The main goal of this research was to classify ecological groups in steppe rangeland and investigate their relationships with plant diversity indices. Therefore, fifty different Land Unit Tracts (LUT) were identified in Khod-Neuk basin, Yazd province, Iran, in 2010. Vegetation and soil samples were taken in th...

Plant Species and Functional Types’ Diversity in Relation to Grazing in Arid and Semi-arid Rangelands, Khabr National Park, Iran

In arid and semi-arid rangelands, grazing as one of the natural or human induced processes has direct and indirect effects on structure and dynamics of plant community and ecosystems. A study was done to analyze the effects of grazing on plant species diversity and Plant Functional Types‘ (PFTs) diversity of arid and semi-arid rangelands. We analyzed plant richness and diversity data from 75 sa...

The ecological role of biodiversity in agroecosystems

Increasingly research suggests that the level of internal regulation of function in agroecosystems is largely dependent on the level of plant and animal biodiversity present. In agroecosystems, biodiversity performs a variety of ecological services beyond the production of food, including recycling of nutrients, regulation of microclimate and local hydrological processes, suppression of undesir...
